Historical context

Constantine I ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until 337, becoming sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324 after prevailing in civil wars against rival emperors. In 324, he founded Constantinople on the site of Byzantium, dedicating it as Nova Roma before it became the empire's new eastern capital in 330. Struck between AD 326 and AD 327 at the mint of Constantinople, this bronze coin depicts Constantius II, Constantine's son who had been elevated to the imperial rank of Caesar on 8 November 324.
