Historical context

Constantine I, also known as Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, becoming the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324 after victorious civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius. He founded the city of Constantinople on the site of Byzantium in 324, initially under the name Nova Roma, before it became the new capital of the empire in 330. This bronze piece was struck at the Constantinople mint between AD 326 and AD 327, during this foundational period of the new imperial seat.
