Historical context

Constantine I, known as Constantine the Great, was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337 and the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. After emerging victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. He founded the city of Constantinople, which he established as the new capital of the empire.

This bronze AE2 or AE3 coinage was struck under Constantine's authority at the Constantinople mint. The obverse presents the emperor with the title "CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG", reflecting his status as Augustus.
