Historical context

Constantine I ruled as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, becoming the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324 after victorious civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius. He founded the city of Constantinople on the site of Byzantium in 324, establishing it in 330 as the new eastern capital of the Roman Empire. This bronze coin was issued under Constantine's authority at his newly established capital mint.
