Historical context

Valerius Licinianus Licinius was Roman emperor from 308 to 324, ruling as the colleague and rival of Constantine I. During this period, the two co-authored the Edict of Milan, granting official toleration to Christians in the Roman Empire. Licinius's reign ultimately concluded when he was defeated at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324 and subsequently executed on the orders of Constantine.

Under the authority of Licinius, this bronze coinage in the AE2 and AE3 denominations was struck at the mint of Cyzicus. The coin was produced naming Crispus, designated on the obverse as "D N FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES", depicting him holding a sceptre and a mappa. The reverse is dedicated to Jupiter under the inscription "IOVI CONSER-VATORI CAESS", portraying the deity standing with a chlamys draped across his shoulder, holding a sceptre alongside Victory on a globe.
