Historical context

Licinius served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, ruling as the colleague and rival of Constantine I, who held power from 306 to 337. Although both rulers co-authored the Edict of Milan granting religious toleration, civil wars between them culminated in Licinius's defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324, leaving Constantine as sole ruler.
