Historical context

Licinius served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, during which he acted as both colleague and rival to Constantine I, with whom he co-authored the Edict of Milan granting toleration to Christians. Constantine later defeated Licinius in civil war in 324 to emerge as sole ruler. This bronze issue was struck between AD 313 and AD 315 under Licinius at Cyzicus, an ancient town situated in the region of Mysia in Anatolia on the Sea of Marmara.
