Historical context

Licinius ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. During most of his reign, he was the colleague and rival of Constantine I, with whom he co-authored the Edict of Milan granting official toleration to Christians across the empire. Licinius was ultimately defeated by Constantine at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324 and was later executed on Constantine's orders.

Struck at the mint of Cyzicus, this bronze AE2 or AE3 coinage carries the obverse legend "IMP LICI-NIVS AVG" alongside a depiction of Licinius holding a sceptre and mappa. The reverse bears the inscription "IOVI CONS-ERVATORI AVGG" and depicts the deity Jupiter, who is represented holding a sceptre and Victory on a globe.
