Historical context

Valerius Licinianus Licinius reigned as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout much of this period, he served as both the colleague and rival of Constantine I. Together, the two rulers co-authored the Edict of Milan, which granted official toleration to Christians across the Roman Empire. Licinius's rule concluded following his defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324, after which he was executed on Constantine's orders.

This bronze AE2 or AE3 piece was produced under Licinius at the Heraclea mint. The obverse presents the laureate head of the emperor, identified by the inscription "IMP C VAL LICIN LICINIVS P F AVG". The reverse design depicts Jupiter, nude with a chlamys across his left shoulder, holding a sceptre alongside a Victory on a globe, accompanied by an eagle carrying a wreath. This scene is paired with the legend "IOVI CONS-ERVATORI AVGG".
