Historical context

Valerius Licinianus Licinius served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout much of this period, he was the colleague and rival of Constantine I, collaborating with him to co-author the Edict of Milan, which extended official toleration to Christians across the Roman Empire. Licinius's rule concluded following his defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324, after which Constantine ordered his execution.

Struck at the Heraclea mint, this bronze AE2 or AE3 piece was issued under the authority of Licinius. The obverse depicts the emperor wearing a laurel wreath and drapery, facing left while holding a sceptre and a mappa, accompanied by the inscription IMP LICI-NIVS AVG. The reverse design features a camp gate constructed with three turrets, no doors, and varying layers of stone, paired with the legend PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG.
