Historical context

This bronze coinage was struck at Heraclea under the authority of Licinius, who served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. During the majority of his reign, Licinius was the colleague and rival of Constantine I, collaborating on the Edict of Milan granting toleration to Christians before being defeated at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324 and subsequently executed on Constantine's orders.

The obverse depicts Crispus, described with the legend "D N FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES", shown laureate and draped while holding a sceptre and a mappa. The reverse features an un-doored camp gate surmounted by three turrets and constructed with varying layers of stone, accompanied by the inscription "PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS".
