Historical context

Licinius (Valerius Licinianus Licinius) served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. For much of his reign he was the colleague and rival of Constantine I, with whom he issued the Edict of Milan granting toleration to Christians throughout the empire. Their rivalry concluded when Constantine defeated him at the Battle of Chrysopolis in AD 324, leading to his execution in 325. This coinage was produced at Heraclea, also known as Perinthus, a flourishing city of ancient Thrace situated on the Propontis.
