Historical context
Licinius reigned as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, acting for most of that time as the colleague and rival of Constantine I. Struck under the authority of Licinius, this bronze coinage portrays Constantine I, with whom Licinius had co-authored the Edict of Milan granting official toleration to Christians across the empire. The piece was produced at the mint of Heraclea, also known as Perinthus, a flourishing city of ancient Thrace on the Propontis.
