Historical context

Constantine I, also known as Constantine the Great, served as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337 after being proclaimed emperor by his troops at Eboracum. Following civil wars against rival tetrarchic rulers including Maxentius and Licinius, Constantine became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. This coin was minted in AD 324 at Heraclea, also known as Perinthus, a major town of ancient Thrace located on the Propontis.
