Historical context

Crispus was the eldest son of Constantine I and was appointed junior colleague, or caesar, in March 317. In 324, Crispus defeated the naval forces of his father's rival Licinius I at the Battle of the Hellespont, which contributed to Constantine becoming sole ruler of the Roman Empire. This bronze issue was struck for Crispus in 324 at the ancient Thracian mint city of Heraclea, also known as Perinthus, situated on the Propontis.
