Historical context

Proclaimed augustus by his troops in Britannia, he emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. His reign brought significant administrative and military reorganisations, alongside the establishment of Constantinople as the imperial capital.

This bronze coinage was issued under Constantine's authority from the mint at Heraclea. The obverse presents the diademed head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG". On the reverse, the legend "D N CONSTANTINI MAX AVG" surrounds a laurel wreath containing the inscription "VOT/XXX", commemorating imperial vows undertaken during his rule across the empire.
