Historical context

Recalled to the west in AD 305 to campaign alongside his father in the province of Britannia, Constantine was proclaimed as augustus by his army at Eboracum following his father's death in 306. He later emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.

Produced under Constantine's authority at the Londinium mint, this bronze AE2 or AE3 piece belongs to imperial base-metal coinage. The obverse presents the emperor with the imperial title in the inscription "IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG". The reverse design depicts Constantine I mounted on horseback, raising his right hand and holding a spear, accompanied by the legend "ADVENT-VS AVG N".
