Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, having first been proclaimed as augustus by his army at Eboracum in Britannia following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius. After fighting in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy, he eventually became the sole ruler of the empire by 324. His administration instituted major administrative reforms and operated mints across the provinces, including at Londinium.

Struck at the Londinium mint under the authority of Constantine I, this bronze coinage features Crispus. The obverse depicts a laureate, cuirassed bust of Crispus accompanied by the legend "FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES". The reverse type portrays Crispus helmeted, draped, and cuirassed, standing with a reversed vertical spear and a shield, accompanied by the inscription "PRINCIPI IV-VENTVTIS".
