Historical context
Constantine I reigned as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having first been proclaimed augustus at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius. After fighting in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy, he became sole ruler of the empire by 324. This issue was struck under his authority at Londinium, an important port and commercial centre that served as the capital of Roman Britain during most of the Roman occupation.
