Historical context

Constantine I ruled as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having first been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum following his campaigns in Britannia. After prevailing in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, he became sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. His administration instituted major administrative reforms and established Constantinople as the imperial capital.

This bronze coinage was issued under the authority of Constantine I from the mint of Londinium, with related types struck at other imperial mints including Constantinople and Siscia. The obverse features Constantius II with the legend "FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C", while the reverse depicts a camp gate with two turrets beneath a star, accompanied by the inscription "PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS".
