Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, having been proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum in 306. Following civil wars against rival emperors such as Maxentius and Licinius, he eventually established himself as sole ruler of the empire by 324. Although remembered as the first Christian Roman emperor, Constantine lived much of his life as a pagan.

Struck at the Lugdunum mint, this bronze coinage bears the obverse title "IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG". The reverse depicts Sol, radiate, holding a globe and raising his right hand, accompanied by the inscription "SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI". The issue forms part of the bronze AE2 and AE3 denominations produced under his authority.
