Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, eventually becoming sole ruler by 324 after victorious civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius. Across his reign, he restructured the imperial government, reorganised the Roman army into mobile units and frontier garrisons, and pursued military campaigns against various tribes along the Roman frontiers, including the Franks, Alemanni, Goths, and Sarmatians.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum, this bronze coinage bears the obverse legend "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG" alongside the laureate portrait of Constantine I. The reverse features the legend "SARMATIA - DEVICTA", accompanying an image of a winged Victory advancing with a trophy and branch while spurning a seated captive, referencing the emperor's frontier campaigns against the Sarmatians.
