Historical context

Produced under Constantine's authority at the Lugdunum mint, this bronze piece features his laureate portrait on the obverse accompanied by the legend "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG". The reverse depicts a camp gate composed of six stone layers with two turrets, shown without doors and beneath an overhead star, paired with the legend "PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG". During his reign, Constantine restructured the administration, introduced monetary reforms, and reorganised the Roman army into mobile field units and frontier-garrison troops while campaigning against external tribes on the Roman borders.
