Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, rising to power after being proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum. Through victories in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, he established himself as the sole ruler of the empire by 324. Constantine enacted extensive administrative and military reforms, reorganising the Roman army into mobile field forces and frontier garrison troops.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum under the authority of Constantine I, this bronze coinage represents the AE2 and AE3 denominations. The obverse features a bust of Crispus with the title "FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES". Paired with this imperial portrait, the reverse depicts a camp gate composed of six stone layers with two turrets, without doors, beneath an overarching star, inscribed with the legend "PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS".
