Historical context

This gold solidus was produced at the Nicomedia mint under the authority of Constantine I. The solidus was a highly pure gold denomination introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, functioning as the primary gold currency of commerce. The obverse depicts Constantine II, while the reverse bears a winged, draped Victory holding a wreath and a palm branch, accompanied by the inscription "CONSTANTI-NVS CAESAR".
