Historical context

Licinius ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, spending much of his reign as the colleague and rival of Constantine I. This bronze coin honours Constantine and was minted between 313 and 317 at Nicomedia. Situated in modern Turkey, Nicomedia had served as the eastern capital of the Roman Empire since 286 under Diocletian, maintaining this status within the Tetrarchy until Constantine defeated Licinius in 324.
