Historical context

Licinius served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout much of his rule, he was the colleague and rival of Constantine I, co-authoring the Edict of Milan granting official toleration to Christians. His reign concluded following his defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324, after which he was executed on Constantine's orders.

This gold aureus was produced at the mint of Nicomedia under Licinius. The aureus functioned as the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD, when the solidus superseded it. The obverse features Licinius and the legend LICINIVS AVG OB D V FILII SVI. The reverse portrays Jupiter seated on a throne inscribed SIC X/SIC XX, holding Victory on a globe and leaning on a sceptre, accompanied by the legend IOVI CONS - LICINI AVG.
