Historical context

Valerius Licinianus Licinius reigned as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, spending much of his rule as the colleague and rival of Constantine I before his eventual defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in AD 324. Maximian had previously served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305 alongside Diocletian, later re-entering imperial politics before his death around July 310. This coinage, produced at Rome under the authority of Licinius, commemorates the deified Maximian.
