Historical context

Licinius reigned as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, acting for most of that period as both colleague and rival to Constantine I. Constantine had been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 and co-authored the Edict of Milan with Licinius, granting official toleration to Christians across the empire. Although this fraction was struck at Rome under Licinius in AD 313 depicting Constantine I, the two rulers eventually clashed in civil war, culminating in Licinius's defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in AD 324.
