Historical context

This bronze coin was issued under the authority of Licinius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout much of his reign, Licinius served as the colleague and rival of Constantine I, co-authoring the Edict of Milan granting religious toleration across the Roman Empire before his eventual defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324 and subsequent execution.

Struck at the mint of Rome as an AE2 or AE3 bronze denomination, the issue honours the deified emperor Maximian. The obverse depicts the veiled and laureate head of Maximian with the inscription "DIVO MAXIMIANO SEN FORT IMP". The reverse carries the legend "MEMORIAE AETERNAE" alongside the image of a lion advancing towards the right, beneath a club.
