Historical context

This bronze coinage was produced under the authority of the Roman emperor Licinius at the mint of Rome. Licinius reigned from 308 to 324, during which time he served as the colleague and rival of Constantine I. Together, the two rulers co-authored the Edict of Milan, granting official religious toleration to Christians across the Roman Empire, before their rivalry ended in Licinius's defeat at Chrysopolis.

Struck in the denominations of AE2 or AE3, this issue pairs an obverse portrait of Constantine I with the reverse legend "SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI". The obverse identifies Constantine with the legend "IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG", while the reverse design displays Sol radiate, wearing a chlamys draped across his left shoulder, raising his right hand and holding a globe in his left hand.
