Historical context

This bronze coin was issued under the authority of Licinius at the mint of Rome. Licinius reigned as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, ruling as both the colleague and rival of Constantine I. During their joint rule, the two emperors co-authored the Edict of Milan, which granted official toleration to Christians across the Roman Empire, before Licinius was ultimately defeated by Constantine at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324.

Struck in the denominations of AE2 and AE3, the piece reflects the political partnership between the rulers. The obverse depicts Constantine I as a laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust, accompanied by the inscription "IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The reverse design depicts Sol, radiate and wearing a chlamys draped across his left shoulder, raising his right hand while holding Victory on a globe, encircled by the legend "SOLI INVICT COM D N".
