Historical context

Licinius served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324, acting as both colleague and rival to Constantine I, with whom he issued the Edict of Milan. The aureus formed the primary gold denomination of the Roman world from the 1st century BC until the introduction of the solidus in the early 4th century AD. This issue was struck at Serdica, an ancient Roman city located in what is now Sofia, Bulgaria.
