Historical context

Struck between AD 313 and AD 314, this aureus was issued under Licinius, who served as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. During this period, Licinius acted as the imperial colleague of Constantine I, who is depicted on the obverse. Together they co-authored the Edict of Milan, granting official toleration to Christians across the Roman Empire, though their relationship later devolved into rivalry before Licinius was finally defeated in AD 324. The coin was produced at the ancient mint of Serdica, modern Sofia, which had been conquered by the Roman Republic in 29 BC.
