Historical context
Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, eventually becoming sole ruler by 324 after victorious civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius. Proclaimed emperor at Eboracum in 306, he enacted broad administrative and military reforms across the empire, reorganised the army, and introduced the solidus to combat inflation.
This bronze coinage was issued under Constantine I at the mint of Siscia. The obverse features the laureate head of Crispus accompanied by the legend "IVL CRIS-PVS NOB C" or "IVL CRISP-VS NOB C", identifying him as Caesar. The reverse bears the inscription "CAESARVM NOSTRORVM" around a laurel wreath enclosing "VOT/V".
