Historical context

Struck at the mint of Siscia, this bronze AE2 or AE3 piece was issued under Constantine's imperial authority. The obverse features the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the legend "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG". The reverse depicts a camp gate with two turrets, without doors, constructed of five or six stone layers with a star above, paired with the legend "PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG". During this broader period, Constantine reorganised the Roman army into mobile field forces and frontier garrison troops to defend against raids and external enemies.
