Historical context

Constantine I served as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having originally been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306. His reign encompassed civil wars of the Tetrarchy, in which he contended against other rulers, including Maxentius and Licinius. These conflicts eventually culminated in Constantine emerging victorious over Licinius to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.

This bronze AE2 or AE3 coinage was produced under the authority of Constantine I at the mint of Thessalonica. Although issued under Constantine's administration, the coin depicts Licinius on the obverse with a laureate head and variations of the legend IMP LIC-INIVS AVG or IMP LICI-NIVS AVG. The reverse design features the inscription VOT/XX enclosed within a laurel wreath, accompanied by the legend D N LIC LICINI AVGVSTI.
