Historical context
This bronze coin was issued under the authority of Valerius Licinianus Licinius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout much of his reign, Licinius was both the colleague and the rival of Constantine I, collaborating with him to co-author the Edict of Milan granting toleration to Christians. His rule ended following his defeat at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324, after which he was executed on Constantine's orders.
Produced at the mint of Thessalonica, this bronze piece is classified under the denominations AE2 and AE3. The obverse features the laureate head of the emperor facing right, accompanied by the inscription "IMP LIC LICINIVS P F AVG". The reverse design depicts Jupiter standing nude with a chlamys over his left shoulder, holding a Victory on a globe and leaning upon a sceptre, flanked by an eagle bearing a wreath, alongside the legend "IOVI CONSE-RVATORI AVGG".
