Historical context
This bronze coinage was issued under Valerius Licinianus Licinius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. During his reign, Licinius served as both the colleague and rival of Constantine I, joining him to co-author the Edict of Milan granting official toleration to Christians. Licinius was ultimately defeated at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324 and subsequently executed on the orders of Constantine.
Produced at the mint of Thessalonica, this AE2 or AE3 piece carries the obverse inscription "IMP LIC LICINIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts Jupiter standing left, draped in a chlamys, holding a Victory on a globe, leaning on a sceptre, and accompanied by an eagle holding a wreath, framed by the legend "IOVI CONSE-RVATORI AVG".
