Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius. After emerging victorious in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius, he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. Constantine enacted extensive administrative and military reorganisations and founded the city of Constantinople.

This bronze coinage was produced under Constantine's authority at the mint of Thessalonica. Struck in base metal as an AE2 or AE3 piece, the coin carries the imperial obverse inscription "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG" or "CONSTANTINVS AVG". The reverse display features the inscription "VOT/XX/MVLT/•XXX•" enclosed within a laurel wreath, accompanied by the Thessalonica mint mark.
