Historical context

This bronze issue was struck at the Thessalonica mint under the authority of Licinius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Throughout the majority of his reign, Licinius was the colleague and rival of Constantine I, with whom he jointly issued the Edict of Milan granting official toleration to Christians within the Roman Empire, before Constantine ultimately defeated him at the Battle of Chrysopolis in 324.

Categorised denominationally as an AE2 or AE3, the piece reflects the imperial relationship between the two rulers by bearing the portrait of Constantine I on the obverse alongside the legend IMP CONSTANTINVS P F INV AVG. The reverse honours the Roman deity Jupiter with the legend IOVI CONS-ERVATORI, depicting the nude god draped in a chlamys, holding a sceptre and a Victory on a globe, accompanied by an eagle holding a wreath.
