Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. Proclaimed emperor at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, he engaged in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against rival emperors, including Maxentius and Licinius. He eventually defeated Licinius to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.

Struck at the Thessalonica mint, this bronze piece was issued under Constantine I during the imperial period. Despite Constantine being the issuing authority, the obverse features the bust and imperial title of Licinius with the legend IMP LICI-NIVS AVG. The reverse depicts the plan of a Roman camp with Sol standing in the middle, raising his right hand and holding a globe, accompanied by the inscription VIRT - EXERC.
