Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum following the death of his father. He fought in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against rival emperors, including Maxentius and Licinius, before eventually emerging victorious by 324 to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire.

Struck at the mint of Trier, this bronze issue carries the obverse legend "IMP LICI-NIVS AVG" alongside a bust of Licinius holding a mappa and sceptre. The reverse pairs the inscription "IOVI CONSER-VATORI AVG" with an eagle carrying Licinius, who bears a thunderbolt and sceptre.
