Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, having initially been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306. Following civil wars against rival emperors of the Tetrarchy, he achieved sole rule of the Roman Empire by 324. His reign saw extensive military reorganisations as well as campaigns against tribes along the Roman frontiers, including the Franks, Alemanni, Goths, and Sarmatians.

This gold solidus was produced at the Trier mint under Constantine's authority. Constantine introduced the solidus in the early fourth century to combat inflation, replacing the aureus as a highly pure gold denomination that served as the standard of commerce in Western Europe into the Early Middle Ages. The reverse bears the legend "VIRTVS - AVGVSTI - N" and depicts Constantine in armour on horseback charging an enemy with a spear, with a second enemy positioned beneath the horse.
