Historical context
Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, eventually becoming sole ruler by 324 after civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius. To combat inflation, he reformed the imperial currency by introducing the gold solidus. His reign was marked by military campaigns directed against frontier tribes, including the Franks, Alemanni, Goths, and Sarmatians.
Struck at Trier, this solidus was issued under the authority of Constantine I but portrays his son Constantine II on the obverse, styled "FL CL CONSTAN-TINVS IVN N C". The reverse design and inscriptions relate directly to frontier conflicts with the Sarmatians. Accompanied by the legend "GAVDIVM RO-MANORVM" and the exergual label "SARMATIA", the imagery depicts a draped figure of Sarmatia seated on the ground beside a trophy of arms, spearheads, and a bow.
