Historical context

Proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum in 306, he became sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324 following civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius. During his reign, Constantine pursued military campaigns against various tribes on the Roman frontiers, including the Franks, the Alemanni, the Goths, and the Sarmatians.

This bronze coinage was issued from the mint of Trier under the authority of Constantine I, identified on the obverse as "CONSTAN-TINVS AVG". The reverse legend "SARMATIA - DEVICTA" and its depiction of Victory holding a trophy while pushing a seated captive relate directly to his frontier campaigns against the Sarmatians, celebrating Roman military success over these tribal forces.
