Historical context

Constantine I, or Constantine the Great, ruled as Roman emperor from AD 306 until his death on 22 May 337, becoming sole ruler of the empire in 324. To combat inflation, he reformed imperial currency by introducing the solidus, a highly pure gold coin weighing approximately 4.45 grams that replaced the aureus. Under his authority at the mint of Trier, this solidus was struck naming his son Constantius II, who had been elevated to the rank of Caesar on 8 November 324.
