Historical context

Constantine I ruled the Roman Empire from AD 306 to 337, having initially been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Constantius. His reign was marked by civil conflicts within the Tetrarchy against rival rulers, including Maxentius and Licinius, before he established sole rule across the empire by 324.

This bronze coinage was issued under the authority of Constantine I from the mint at Trier. Although struck during Constantine's rule, the obverse bears the portrait and title of his contemporary ruler Licinius with the legend LICINIVS P F AVG. The reverse design features a turreted genius, draped in a himation and holding a patera and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription GENIO - POP ROM.
