AE3 in billon struck at Alexandria under Constantius II, AD 337–AD 340, catalogued as RIC VIII Alexandria 11. Obverse: Bust of Constantinopolis, laureate with crested helmet, wearing ornamental mantle and necklace, sceptre over left shoulder, left.

Reverse: Victory, winged, draped, standing left, right foot on prow, holding transverse sceptre in right hand and resting left hand on shield. Obverse legend: CONSTAN-TINOPOLIS.

Historical context

Constantius II was elevated to the rank of Caesar in 324 by his father, Constantine the Great. Following Constantine's death, Constantius became Augustus on 9 September 337 alongside his brothers, Constantine II and Constans. In the division of the Roman Empire among the brothers, Constantius received Egypt, Greece, Thrace, and the Asian provinces in the east. Struck between AD 337 and AD 340, this coin was minted at Alexandria, an ancient city founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great at the western edge of the Nile River Delta.
