Historical context

Following the death of Constantine the Great on 22 May 337, his son Constantius II became Augustus on 9 September 337 alongside his brothers, Constantine II and Constans. The brothers divided the Roman Empire among themselves, with Constantius II receiving Greece, Thrace, the Asian provinces, and Egypt in the east. This posthumous coin honouring Constantine I was struck between AD 337 and AD 340 under Constantius II at Alexandria, a major seaport and intellectual centre in Egypt that had been founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great.
